Lesson 4: Polymer Flow During Packing

Understanding the impact of packing pressures on polymer flow is an important aspect of successful processing. Our goal in this lesson is to evaluate the predominant polymer flow during packing. We will take a detailed look at the areas of continuous polymer flow, specifically during packing and cooling.

Topics in this lesson include: modify filling-to-packing switch-over points and packing profiles, how to understand the predominant polymer packing flow path by evaluating tracer results, melt core, packing pressure and clamp tonnages, and volumetric shrinkage development.

Polymer Flow During Packing

Learn the fundamentals of process optimization by understanding how different phases in the injection molding cycle will influence the overall part quality. Build your Circle of Knowledge lesson by lesson.

Goals of Processing: Packing and Cooling Phase (Level 1):

  • Learn the fundamentals of process optimization by analyzing the packing and cooling phase of molding a part
  • Gain an understanding of how part design, mold design, and process are connected and interdependent
  • Analyze real-life molded parts and learn the cause-and-effect behaviors of design and process

Section Description:

Molding high-quality parts depends on many factors, including skillful part and mold design, an understanding of polymer material behavior, and an optimized process. Injection molding processing engineers must follow key steps to ensure consistently high-quality molded parts.

This section covers explanations, simulations, cause-and-effect analyses, and various packing and cool phase variables.

Recommendation: Entry-Level Operators, Technicians, & Designers
