Lesson 4: Optimizing the Filling Speed

Fill speed is one of the most important variables for achieving a uniform process. In this lesson we will focus on optimizing fill speed to achieve uniform temperature distribution inside the cavity from the gate to the end of flow. Even temperature distribution ensures uniform frozen layers, packing distribution, cooling, and shrinkage behaviors.

Topics in this lesson include: why determining optimal fill speed and fill speed profiles is important for uniform processing, how different fill speeds impact flow-front temperature ranges inside a mold, and the effect of different wall thicknesses on flow-front temperature ranges, shear rates, and shear rates at different fill speeds.

Learn the fundamentals of process optimization by understanding how different phases in the injection molding cycle will influence the overall part quality. Build your  Circle of Knowledge lesson by lesson.

Goals of Processing: Filling Phase (Level 1):

  • Learn the fundamentals of process optimization by analyzing the filling phase of molding a part
  • Gain an understanding of how part design, mold design, and process are connected and interdependent
  • Analyze real-life molded parts and learn the cause-and-effect behaviors of design and process

Section Description:

Molding high-quality parts depends on many factors, including skillful part and mold design, an understanding of polymer material behavior, and an optimized process. Injection molding processing engineers must follow key steps to ensure consistently high-quality molded parts.

Explanations, simulations, cause and effect analyses, and various filling phase variables are covered in this section.
