Lesson 6: Twin Tower Dual and Single Blower Dryers

Several commercial polymer dryers are available, including desiccant dryers, hot air dryers, compressed air dryers, and blower dryers. Selecting an appropriate dryer depends on many factors, including the type of material to be dried, the molding facility, and the application. In parts 1 and 2 of this lesson, you will learn the basic principles of the operations of two types of polymer dryers. In this first part, we will focus on blower dryers.

Learning the Fundamentals of Polymer Drying

Goals of Polymer Materials Drying (Level 2):

  • Learning the fundamentals of Polymer Drying
  • The basic operations of Polymer Dryers
  • Troubleshooting Polymer Dryers

Section Description:

This section will delve into the critical process of plastic drying, an essential step in preparing thermoplastic materials for processing. Thermoplastic polymers differ significantly in their ability to attract or absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Several factors, such as the specific type of polymer, including additives and the prevailing ambient humidity, influence this moisture absorption. If not adequately addressed, excessive moisture can adversely affect the efficiency of the processing equipment and lead to defects in the finished product’s physical properties or cosmetic quality.
