Lesson 3: Flow Restrictors

Designing parts with nominal wall thickness is ideal yet not always possible. In the previous lesson you learned that flow leaders or internal runners can be used as a design feature to achieve uniform filling and packing. In this lesson we will introduce flow restrictors, another design feature that serves a similar purpose.

Flow restrictors redirect and restrain material flow and allow for uniform filling patterns. This lesson covers issues such as air entrapment, flow hesitations, and race-track effects when using flow restrictors in part design.

Early in the part design phase, designers must establish design parameters, a necessary step for molding high-quality parts that meet specifications and expectations.

This section covers explanations, simulations, cause-and-effect analyses, and the uses of various design features. Understanding these design features is important because they influence a part’s moldability, function, appearance, and quality.
