Lesson 9: Troubleshooting Polymer Dryer Systems 2

Engineering materials such as nylon, polycarbonate, and the like are hygroscopic polymers. When exposed to a humid atmosphere, these materials absorb and retain water. However, this process can be reversed. Within this lesson, we will focus on drying equipment.

Learning the Fundamentals of Polymer Drying

Goals of Polymer Materials Drying (Level 2):

  • Learning the fundamentals of Polymer Drying
  • The basic operations of Polymer Dryers
  • Troubleshooting Polymer Dryers

Section Description:

This section will delve into the critical process of plastic drying, an essential step in preparing thermoplastic materials for processing. Thermoplastic polymers differ significantly in their ability to attract or absorb moisture from the surrounding air. Several factors, such as the specific type of polymer, including additives and the prevailing ambient humidity, influence this moisture absorption. If not adequately addressed, excessive moisture can adversely affect the efficiency of the processing equipment and lead to defects in the finished product’s physical properties or cosmetic quality.
